Avon Park

Avon Park is known as the "City of Charm", and sits at the top of Lake Lotela, one of Highland County's numerous lakes.  The city is proud of their historical Mail Street and their "Mile Long Mall".

Even though citrus and livestock are the major contributors to the economy, several major industries call Avon Park home.  Water-sports are a favorite activity along with golf, hiking, and biking.

William and Mary King were the first permanent settlers.  William arrived her on February 9, 1886 from Birmingham, England, and became the manager of the new settlement.  According to his wife Mary, William was from the royal lineage of England and she a commoner.  Mary, who arrived in May of 1886, say the rustic beauty reminded her of her home in Shakespeare's Village, Stratford-On Avon in England.  She suggested that the tgown be called Avon Park. 

William King had a tube well drilling business along with other business interest.  He was the first elected mayor of Avon Park in 1909.  Mary King was the first woman to registger to vote in Avon Park, and known to her friends as "The Mother of Avon Park".
