Stuart, Florida
In 2008, the American In Bloom organization named Stuart the “Most Beautiful City” in America.
In Stuart, Gilbert’s Bar House of Refuge was built in 1875 as a haven for shipwrecked sailors. It is the only lifesaving station in Florida left standing, and is the oldest building left standing in Martin County. Today, it houses a museum of marine history, along with a sea turtle hatchery and sanctuary.
This area is crisscrossed by the St. Lucie and Indian Rivers and the Okeechobee Waterway, all flowing into the St. Lucie Inlet. From here you can travel through the locks at Phipps Park across the State to the Caloosahatchee River which feeds out into the Gulf of Mexico.
Stuart, known as the “Sailfish Capital of the World”, hosts numerous fishing tournaments throughout the year, and don’t miss the world’s fastest hydroplane races.
Historical downtown Stuart is lined with Victorian style lampposts. Stroll down the river walk along the banks of the St. Lucie River.
Just over the bridge lies Hutchinson Island. Residents of this coastal community can walk to the sand dune beaches from their homes.
