Manatee County is famous for DeSoto’s landing in 1539, and throughout the county you will find historical landmarks denoting the preservation of the past. The County has over 150 miles of shoreline. You can charter a boat for offshore fishing in the Gulf of Mexico or in the fresh waters of the Manatee River.
In Ellenton, the Gamble Plantation will take you back to the Old South. The Gamble Mansion, built in 1845, is the oldest home on Florida’s West Coast. Major Robert Gamble opened a 3,500-acre sugar cane plantation along the Manatee River. This plantation became the richest cane land in America. Sugar cane, citrus and olives were shipped to nearby and distant markets including New Orleans.
During the Civil War the mills were burned and the equipment bombed, leaving only the mansion standing. The cane never revived along the River and today just a small patch of sugar cane still remains.
