Frank Higel, considered to be the “Father of Venice”, renamed this town in 1888 because of the Italian architecture of the city reminded him of his home town, Venice, Italy. Today it is dubbed one of Florida’s “Main Street, USA” towns for its historic preservation.
Venice is the “Shark Tooth Capital of the World”. A single Tiger shark can produce as many as 24,000 teeth in ten years. Since the beginning of time, sharks have been swimming and dying in the Gulf of Mexico leaving behind billions of teeth, some dating back as far as ten million years. The calmer waters of Venice have allowed the sharks teeth to remain in place and not wash out to sea. On any of Venice’s beaches you will find people with their buckets and rakes searching for fossilized shark teeth.
