DeLand Florida

As you drive on the hilly highways of central Florida, you will smell the sweet scent of orange blossoms, as thousands of orange groves grace the countryside.

It is a must to travel along the scenic streets of DeLand, which are lined with stately oak trees. These majestic hardwood trees where planted by Henry DeLand, the town's founder, in the late 1800's. Henry DeLand, a New York baking powder manufacturer and the famous Philadelphia hat maker, John B Stetson, laid the foundation for this city, which lies along the banks of St Johns River, in 1876. It is the home of Stetson University, named after Mr Stetson for his generous financial assistance. Henry DeLand died in 1908, but the spirit of his dream to create an "Athens of Florida" still lives on.
