Lake Placid is the “Caladium Capital of the World”. The first caladiums were planted in the 1940’s and now the colorful fields span over 1,200 acres.
Lake Placid is named in honor of Dr. Melvil Dewey, creator of the Dewey Decimal System. In the 1920’s he wintered here and found it remarkably similar to his home town Lake Placid, NY. The city is surrounded on all sides by 27 deep, freshwater lakes.
