Estero, Florida

To the south of Ft. Myers you will come across the small town of Estero.  It was established by a religious visionary, Dr. Cyrus Read Teed, of Chicago, in 1894. Founder of the Koreshan Unity,  he  brought to being his “College of Life” along the banks of the Estero River.  The belief was that “We live inside the World”, that the earth is the Universe and celestial bodies are inside the World.

Now at the Koreshan State Historic Site, you can visit the restored buildings and gardens.  The gardens of the Koreshan Nursery became famous for its subtropical plant life.

Just to the south of Estero is Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary.  This 11,000-acre sanctuary is owned and operated by the National Audubon Society.  Within this wilderness stand some of the nations oldest and tallest virgin bald cypress, estimated at 700 years old and 130 feet tall.

Estero is centered between Ft Myers and Naples, Florida.
