New Port Richey

New Port Richey will reward you with a little bit of Old Florida. Nestled along the banks of the Pithlachascotee River, New Port Richey is the largest city in Pasco County and features a historic downtown with shops, restaurants and beautiful Spanish-revival architecture.

Incorporated in 1924, New Port Richey was a magnet for the rich and famous in the Roaring 20s. Celebrities like Shirley Temple, Greta Garbo and Charlie Chaplin came to Florida for the great weather and glamorous parties in places like New Port Richey's Hacienda Hotel. A few even built homes here, including Babe Ruth, Shirley Temple and Gloria Swanson. Built in 1926, the Richey Suncoast Theatre has been restored to its glorious splendor and features excellent stage productions.

The Pithlachascotte River, nicknamed the "Cotee River", flows directly through the heart of New Port Richey.  The Cotee River is one of the deepest rivers on Florida's Beg Bend.  The river, along with the Gulf of Mexico and numerous lakes that abound the area, making fishing and water sports a favorite pastime.  The river is one of 36 designated by the Department of Natural Resources as an official canoe trail.  The Trail down this waterway is laced with tight curves so experienced canoeist are recommended.

If its deep water you are looking for, direct access to the Gulf of Mexico provides a variety of sport fishing opportunities.  Several charter boats can take you on a days excursion for grouper, sail, marlin, and shark fishing.  For those who like gambling, take a ride on one of Vegas-style casino boats.
